Selon le procureur, Manning s’était rendu coupable, en plus des charges diverses liées à la violation de la législation sur l’espionnage, d’un délit encore bien plus grave, à savoir de trahison envers son pays et de collusions avec les ennemis des Etats-Unis d’Amérique.

Son avocat (David Coombs) a soutenu, lors de ses plaidoiries finales, que Manning n’était pas un traître, comme l’affirme l’accusation, mais quelqu’un dont les intentions étaient fondées sur des principes (car choqué par ce qu'il a vu en Irak).
