(*) A hashtag is a word, a group of words or a phrase with no spaces preceded by the symbol # within a short message or tweet. It helps identify a topic of interest.

More and more people resort to social platforms to make sure they can express their views and feelings about specific trending subjects and get heard. By using the hashtags originally generated by Twitter and widespread by social networking sites, their users find out more information about specific topics they are interested in, which also enables them to get connected and to become a part of a larger discussion.

Labor Day: a national holiday in the USA (originally led in 1882 by a workers' union to create a holiday for workers) taking place on the first Monday of September. It is associated with the end of the summer period and is therefore a time to put away one's summer clothes or summer white clothes. White stands for the colour worn for sports and leisure and is clearly considered inappropriate after Labor Day.

ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is an islamist terror group based in Iraq and Syria held responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes (ethnic cleansing and executions of Western hostages)...

Ray Rice: NFL (National Football League) football player. He was seen punching his then fiancée in a lift. As soon as that video was released, he was suspended indefinitely from the NFL. After an appeal that he won in November 2014, he was reinstated in the NFL.

Beverley Gooden: a social activist who initiated the Twitter hashtag #WhyIStayed. She was herself a victim of domestic violence and wanted to outline why people would choose to stay, even in an abusive relationship.

Boko Haram: an islamist terror group based in Nigeria and held responsible for mass murders and abducting women and children - among them the 276 schoolgirls who were kidnapped in April 2014.

Christmas Truce
(Level: intermediate to upper-intermediate / B2 to C1 / ** to ***)

The 'Christmas Truce' refers to a series of unofficial cessations of hostilities that occurred along the Western Front around Christmas 1914. 

It started on Christmas Eve when the German soldiers started singing Christmas carols and placing Christmas trees lit with candles above the trenches, particularly in the Ypres region and in the Comines and Ploegsteert sectors. Soldiers from both sides left their trenches and ventured into no man's land to shake hands, drink and smoke together.

No-one knows for sure when the truce ended and fighting recommenced.  
In some areas, the Truce lasted until after Christmas Day and in other sectors until New Year's Day. But it stopped anyway after the higher command on both sides had issued orders to resume fighting and killing the enemy. 

Letters were sent home by the soldiers who were there and some were even published in local newspapers. 
Those letters can be considered first-hand accounts of what the Truce was really like.

Our society regards Christmas as the ideal festive moment for anyone to be sitting with the family or friends around the Christmas tree or a table with the traditional stuffed turkey on it. 

Now if some would definitely rather enjoy their own company, specifically on that day, it is no wonder that they run the risk of being considered stressed, lonely, antisocial or anti-conformist people. 
But that does not prevent them from experiencing a pleasant moment as they feel free of all constraints.
