When should you hang up?

You can’t phone or text while driving your car – but is it okay if you use your phone at a supermarket checkout for instance or anywhere during any social situation?

The BBC wanted to know after a supermarket apologised to a customer who was refused service by a checkout worker as long as she was chatting on her phone.

Was the checkout worker right? What do you think?

Clearly, the customer’s attitude was rude and disrespectful making the checkout worker feel non-existent or undervalued. 

Obviously, the customer lacked etiquette and yet, she was given apologies.

At the end of his report (before being interrupted by his own phone), Graham Satchell gives one example of good mobile manners which he picked up from Debrett's.
"Don't carry on mobile phone calls while transacting other business - in banks, shops, on buses and so on. [...]"

Debrett’s is an authority on matters of good conduct which has produced guides on traditional British etiquette, manners, social occasions, polite behaviour in society and books about people of distinction.

Living in Antarctica

You are going to watch part of a BBC News website series called Real Time focusing on “extraordinary stories” told by “ordinary people”.

This programme is devoted to a family, Carolina and Fernando Font and their young son, who decided to live in the tiny town of Villa Las Estrellas in the Antarctic Peninsula for two years while Fernando serves as an officer in the Chilean Air Force.

Living there can really be challenging and involves quite a lot of organisation. But they regret nothing and say that living there has only improved their family life.



Before watching

Here are a few facts about Villa Las Estrellas and Antarctica:

 

Villa Las Estrallas is a Chilean town located in the Antarctic Peninsula and more specifically, in the Chilean Antarctic Territory, i.e. the territory in Antarctica claimed by Chile.

In Antarctica, temperatures get to a minimum of between −80 °C and −90 °C in the interior in winter and reach a maximum of between 5 °C and 15 °C near the coast in summer.

 

Because the Antarctic Peninsula is the most northerly part of Antarctica, it has the mildest climates within the continent. The temperatures there are warmest in January, 1 to 2°C on average, and coldest in June, from -15°C to - 20°C on average. The west coast from the tip of the Peninsula is the mildest part of Antarctica Peninsula thanks to its maritime climate. In this part of the continent, temperatures go beyond 0°C for about three to four months during the summer, and rarely fall below -10°C during the winter.  More in the south, the coast of the Peninsula is generally much colder with temperatures exceeding 0°C for only 0–1 months of summer and in winter temperatures reaching an average of -25°C.

1 L’habitation pourrait être considérée comme une sorte de cabane par certains mais Carolina dit qu’elle est similaire aux maisons sur le continent (sud-américain / au Chili).   2 C’est l’endroit où elle et sa petite famille font de bonnes choses ensemble ; agréable l’été aussi avec les jours très longs.   3 Elle estime qu’elle a de la chance de vivre là / qu’elle a eu raison de saisir cette opportunité car cela lui permet de bien s’occuper de son fils surtout durant ses premières années. Avant, cela lui faisait mal au cœur de laisser son enfant quand elle devait aller travailler.   4 Ils aiment se trouver là ; ils regardent des films, jouent à des jeux vidéo ou lisent ; cela rend les choses plus supportables.   5 Leur style de vie s’est amélioré ; ils se rendent compte qu’ils n’ont pas besoin de tant de choses que ça pour vivre.

1 Constituer des stocks énormes de nourriture pour le garde-manger et autres fournitures en tous genres pour tenir le coup toute une année (par exemple, elle a dû acheter en une fois près de 2500 langes …);  avoir une bonne réserve de médicaments…   2 En été, il est possible de se faire livrer des colis par la famille restée au continent parce qu’il y a plus de vols mais en hiver, c’est très limité !   3 Il faut se faire retirer l’appendice avant d’aller s’y établir ; l’urgence médicale doit absolument être évitée là-bas !

L'enquête a montré que 52 % des Britanniques  ont du mal de joindre les deux bouts avant la fin de chaque mois alors qu'ils n'étaient que de 35% en 2006. Ce phénomène concerne 26 millions de personnes dans tout le Royaume-Uni.

De plus en plus de prêts sur salaire sont contractés pour combler un manque d'argent qui devient récurrent. 20% des personnes interrogées disent vouloir disposer dans l'immédiat d'une somme de 200 livres sterling plutôt que 400 dans 4 mois!

C'est un problème qui touche les gens en général, avec des revenus moyens,  et non pas les personnes qui vivent à la limite du seuil de pauvreté ou celles qui bénéficient d'allocations!

Des personnes qui, à un moment donné, ne peuvent plus faire face à leurs obligations financières comme payer le prêt hypothécaire ou le loyer; des personnes qui ne parviennent plus à boucler les fins de mois...

De plus en plus de gens se focalisent sur l'urgence et les impératifs du présent,  l'immédiateté, le très court terme, le "ici et maintenant". Et tout ça au détriment de projets d'avenir!
