Deadly tornado in Moore, Oklahama

On 20th May 2013 a deadly tornado occurred in Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA.

It was an EF5 (*) tornado with peak winds estimated at 340 km/h, killing 24 people.

(*) EF = Enhanced Fugita Scale; a scale rating the strength of tornadoes in the USA and Canada based on the damage caused by them.

The Shard

You are going to watch a news video from BBC's technology programme 'Click' with presenter Spencer Kelly exploring some of the technology, namely the augmented reality telescopes inside the Shard's observation gallery. 

 
Before watching / listening

 Here are a few facts and interesting sites about the Shard:

The Shard is the tallest building in Western Europe and was designed in 2000 by Italian architect Renzo Piano also known for designing the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

The building owes its name to the criticism expressed by English Heritage (*) who claimed the building would be 'a shard of glass through the heart of historic London'.
(*) English Heritage is a non-governmental organization sponsored by the British Government and has responsibilities in advising, registering and protecting the historic environment.

The Shard's construction started in May 2009 and was inaugurated in July 2012 just in time for the opening of the London Olympics.
 
The observation or viewing galleries were open to the public in February 2013.

Insect meals: yum yum!

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), edible creepy-crawlies (insects) may be a solution to tackle world problems and also to provide a healthier diet.  

You are going to watch a Sky News report - and bon appétit!

Before watching / listening:
The following words and notes could be useful:
edible: eatable / that can be eaten / not poisonous       (bon à manger / consommable...)
to tackle (a problem): to try to deal with a problem / to try and solve it   (s'attaquer à...)
root causes: main causes   (causes premières)

The Food and Agriculture Organization (of the United Nations) or FAO: a specialized agency of the United Nations in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.

Eva Muller is the lady being interviewed in the report. She is Director of UN Food and Agriculture Organization Forest Economic Policy and Products Division and is responsible for a report on edible insects.

D'une part, le problème d'obésité dans le monde occidental (500 millions de personnes classées comme telles) avec tout ce que cela implique en coûts pour la sécurité sociale (soins de santé...), l'économie et d'autre part, le problème de la famine ou de la malnutrition dans le monde (870 millions de personnes qui souffrent de la faim); problème qui risque encore de s'accroître vu la densité de population toujours à la hausse...

a) les insectes sont nutritifs, riches en protéines, en fer, calcium et zinc, et ne constituent pas une nourriture trop grasse ;

e) Les insectes ont besoin de beaucoup moins d'eau et produisent moins de gaz à effets de serre que le bétail.
f) Ils vont probablement constituer un marché rentable à l'avenir...
g) Fin ou diminution de la surproduction animale et forêts préservées (puisque moins de pâturages).

WW2 coded letters deciphered by top mathematician

Naval officer John Pryor was a POW (Prisoner of War) during World War 2 and was allowed to write letters to his family. But his letters turned out to be coded.
Only recently have their hidden messages been revealed!

Strong (or irregular) verbs

In the Germanic languages, strong verbs refer to those which are mainly characterized by the apophony phenomenon, i.e. the internal vowel or stem modification commonly indicating the differences between present (or infinitive), past and past participle forms.

Dutch:     spreken    sprak(en)   gesproken           beginnen   begon (nen) begonnen         eten  at(en) gegeten

The majority of the remaining verbs form the past tense by means of a dental suffix (- ed pronounced /t/, /d/, /id/ in English) and they are known as weak verbs
