The "new" hazardous drinking game that goes viral on social media sites has already claimed several lives in the UK. 

You are going to watch a CNN report focusing on that issue.

Le principe est de se filmer sur les sites de réseaux sociaux en buvant cul sec de l'alcool (généralement en grande quantité) et de "nominer" des personnes susceptibles d'en faire autant, voire plus, dans les 24 heures, sous peine de se faire ridiculiser sur Facebook ou Twitter.

L'alcool affecte la capacité d'appréhender les risques et d'y réagir en connaissance de cause. Or, la pratique de boire cul-sec s'accompagne de plus en plus souvent d'actes farfelus, bizarres, audacieux, osés...

Il suffirait que les sites de réseaux sociaux prennent la peine de condamner ce type de comportement, notamment en supprimant les vidéos postées par les adeptes. Ce qui signifie que plus personne ne les verrait, ni même ne serait "neknominé". L'intérêt pour ce type de pratique se tarirait aussitôt!

The winter storms that battered the UK are said to have caused the greatest loss of trees in a generation in some areas.

Before watching

You are going to watch a Sky News report focusing on the worst damage woodlands, parks and gardens across the UK have suffered, at least since the Great Storm of 1987.

Des centaines d'arbres (épinettes entre autres) ont été arrachés et les sols détrempés les empêchent de reprendre racine...

 

Des milliers d'arbres sont perdus dans les bois, parcs et jardins. Par exemple à Killerton où près de 500 arbres ont été détruits ou à Stourhead où l'on déplore la perte de 400 arbres, dont un chêne de près de 250 ans...

La chute des arbres a fait apparaître des clairières où la lumière atteint à présent le sol des forêts et où les fleurs printanières font leur apparition et attirent la vie sauvage; de jeunes pousses d'arbres vont bientôt émerger du sol!

Explain  11.000 miles (17.700 km) de côtes .    Explain the direct consequence of the weather conditions on parts of the British shoreline.      Des pans entiers du littoral britannique ont été ravagés par les marées avec une érosion importante (dans certaines zones: l'équivalent de sept années en à peine deux semaines!)
Inland territories	Building new homes is a hot topic: explain!   Des centaines d'habitations ont été construites dans des zones inondables et d'autres pourront encore l'être (le feu vert a été octroyé par les autorités encore tout récemment) ; on n'a pas tenu compte des alertes du passé (2007).
Thames estuary	The Jubilee River? -Aim? Canal de diversion pour (tenter) de juguler les crues de la Tamise en détournant une partie des eaux de celle-ci.    -Criticisms? Un des plus gros projets d'ingénierie qui aura coûté plus de 100 millions de livres sterling et qui n'aura pas rempli son rôle!    Le problème des inondations n'est pas réglé pour autant avec ce système; il permet juste à certaines villes (comme Windsor) d'être épargnées des inondations et ne fait que déplacer le problème ailleurs...

Les perspectives d'avenir resteront floues.
Les experts estiment que les moyens mis en œuvre pour lutter contre les inondations ne seront jamais parfaits à l'instar de ceux mis en place pour protéger le pays de tout acte de terrorisme. 

London Tube strike

The London Underground (LU) workers' unions decided to walk out because the company (LU) had planned to close the Tube ticket offices which would lead to the loss of hundreds of jobs.

 

A 48-hour strike took place from 4th February and another one is due this week from 11th February onwards. It is clear that such actions have their implications.

You are going to watch a BBC report focusing on the disruption caused by the strike in the capital city but also on some reactions to the action, among which the Mayor of London's.

- Détermination des habitants de retourner coûte que coûte dans les maisons qu'ils ont été contraints d'abandonner face à la montée des eaux et d'emporter des effets personnels.

- Volonté pour certains de tenir bon et de rester chez eux le plus longtemps possible mais il faut se résigner au final à partir et tout abandonner.

- Véritable déchirement de voir sa maison inondée, de voir des objets qui flottent partout et sentir cette odeur d'eau stagnante.
