With more than 100,000 migrants crossing the Mediterranean from north Africa so far this year and arriving in southern Europe, it is no wonder that hundreds of them are heading north to the French port of Calais with the hope of crossing the Channel and reaching Britain.

But the pressure there is growing gradually as the influx of migrants keeps rising dramatically by the day.

You are going to watch a BBC report focusing on the issue.

Before watching:
The following words and notes could be useful:
a shantytown: a town or any place with lots of shacks, shanties or huts around inhabited by very poor people or refugees...       bidonville   
an upsurge: a rapid rise   / an escalation           un regain / une recrudescence 
charred (= burned / scorched) remnants ( = fragments / what's left over / what remains) :                       les restes calcinés 
a shack: a crudely built cabin or shelter  / a shanty       baraque / baraquement / cabane...  
a charity: an organisation set up to provide help, food...    ASBL / association caritative
undermanned: understaffed / insufficiently furnished with personnel    en sous-effectif   


the Jungle:  name given to the makeshift camp(s) in the dunes near the port of Calais.

Parmi les immigrants: 

• vie misérable dans les camps de fortune; 8 à 10 personnes par "tente"; 
• tensions et conflits (origines ethniques différentes; exemple: conflits entre Erythréens et Soudanais et parties de campement incendiées...); concurrence entre les migrants dans le cadre des tentatives d'embarquements clandestins;
• risques d'exploitation sexuelle des femmes et autres violences à leur encontre;
• tous sont désespérés et essaient de "se frayer" un passage vers la Grande-Bretagne; après avoir été accueillis en Méditerranée, ils sont ici sans cesse repoussés par les forces de l'ordre...

Parmi les forces de l'ordre:

• Policiers en sous-effectifs;
• ils craignent le pire cet été / Problème quatre fois plus sévère que l'an passé, vu le nombre croissant de réfugiés sur place (3.000 maintenant contre à peine quelques centaines l'an passé!)

Aussi:

Les associations caritatives d'aide aux réfugiés qui distribuent de la nourriture une fois par jour mais vu leur nombre sans cesse grandissant...    

Les riverains sont inquiets, surtout ceux qui vivent à proximité des camps de fortune. Ils estiment qu'ils sont livrés à eux-mêmes puisque, d'après eux, le gouvernement français ne fait rien... 

 + les décideurs au niveau européen n'ont pas de solutions à apporter face à cette crise!
