Ten years ago, on 7th July 2005, London was viciously attacked by four suicide bombers. 52 people were killed and more than 700 others were injured.

The events are called the 7/7 London attacks: four Islamists detonated bombs hidden in backpacks in quick successive attacks aboard London Underground trains. A fourth bomb exploded later on a double-decker bus.

Here is a timeline by Sky News for you to see how that day unfolded.
You can also watch survivors telling their stories.

Robots that could change our lives

Robots that could change our lives
(Level: upper-intermediate / B2 /***)

Socibot: a very sophisticated robot
Photo credit: www.bbc.co.uk

Robots are becoming more and more sophisticated in that some can now "interpret" human emotions. Because of that, they could even come to replace humans on the workplace. These machines have the potential of changing the way we live!

You are going to watch a BBC report focusing on the issue.

Before watching:

The following words could be useful:
to cheer someone up: to cause (someone) to feel happier or more cheerful     remonter le moral de qn.
a forklift truck: a small industrial vehicle with  a front platform used to raise, lower or carry a load       chariot élévateur
to get on with: to progress with ; to get ahead with     poursuivre

Pepper: another sophisticated robot but with a difference
Photo credit: www.bbc.co.uk

While watching:

Answer the following questions:

1. Explain how sophisticated robots are becoming: what can they do?
2. How are robots like Pepper and Socibot different from each other?
3. Are they becoming a threat to humans now?  Explain!

You can also watch the report on the BBC website: click HERE

When you are finished, you can check your answers:

1

- ... aux vidéos explicatives de la vie quotidienne en orbite qu'elle a postées (de véritables tranches de vie dans la Station...);

A digital detox challenge

A digital detox challenge
(Level: intermediate / B1 / **)

Photo credit: internet-safety.yoursphere.com

Computers, tablets and smartphones are everywhere. Even young children turn to them to such an extent that they too are at risk of being addicted to them and missing out various social skills.

That is why a primary school headmaster in Wellington in Shropshire decided to set a challenge to his pupils.

You are going to watch a BBC report focusing on this issue.

When you are finished, you can check your answers:

Digital Dark Age: once the information contained
 in these storage media is lost for good
Photo credit: www.geeksnack.com

We are used to systematically saving our information on our hard drives or "in the cloud" or relying on all sorts of storage media which may inevitably turn obsolete. No doubt we risk therefore losing parts of our life stories for good.

You are going to watch a BBC report focusing on the issue and also a part of an interview with internet pioneer and Google Vice President Vint Cerf.

Before watching:

The following words could be useful:
cherished: kept fondly in mind / treasured        prisé / précieux

impermanent: ephemeral / transitory      éphémère / momentané
a snapshot: a snap / a photograph        (cliché) instantané

While watching:

Answer the following questions:

1. a) What is the digital Dark Age exactly?
    b) What should we seriously start being worried about?

2. What should be done, according to Vint Cerf?

You can also watch the report on the BBC website by clicking HERE

When you are finished, you can check your answers:

Suggestions de réponses

1.

With more than 100,000 migrants crossing the Mediterranean from north Africa so far this year and arriving in southern Europe, it is no wonder that hundreds of them are heading north to the French port of Calais with the hope of crossing the Channel and reaching Britain.

But the pressure there is growing gradually as the influx of migrants keeps rising dramatically by the day.

You are going to watch a BBC report focusing on the issue.

While watching:

Answer the following question:

There is now a real crisis unfolding in Calais and lots of people are involved in it: the migrants themselves, the police, the locals...
Can you explain that?

You can also watch the report on the BBC website: click HERE

When you are finished, you can check your answers.

Suggestions de réponses:

Parmi les immigrants:

  • vie misérable dans les camps de fortune; 8 à 10 personnes par "tente";
  • tensions et conflits (origines ethniques différentes; exemple: conflits entre Erythréens et Soudanais et parties de campement incendiées...); concurrence entre les migrants dans le cadre des tentatives d'embarquements clandestins;
  • risques d'exploitation sexuelle des femmes et autres violences à leur encontre;

  • Policiers en sous-effectifs;
